To Learn or not to Learn... that is my question

Okay, so I'm up for a big decision. It involves money. I'd love advice from friends. A friend of mine is encouraging me to get my doctorate with him. I want to- had planned on waiting til I was about 32. I want to pay off Lipscomb and Masters' loans. BUT, if I got my doctorate, I would make (after 3 yrs.) what I will be making at the END of my career with my Master's. Gwinnett Co. has the whole step-process of salary posted every year. It's something to think about. I don't know if I'm taking on too much debt- house, loans, car. (Doctorate will cost $38K.) I really need a financial advisor. Plus it makes me nervous to think about all the work. But my brain is still used to all the work. =) And I DO want my doctorate at some point- my goal is to teach college one day. (Ed. majors at LU: I want to be Dr. Mary. =) ) So, any comments? Thanks for any thoughts! I know I'll have to pray a lot.

You would be an AWESOME Dr. Mary!!!!!!!!!!! :) I say get it N-O-W.... you're not married, no kids, and your mind is still fresh on learning- you are set! As far as the $$$-talk to an advisor like you said, and how fabulous that you would be making so much more so soon and can pay that debt off even faster!! :)

First off- hooray, that you still want to learn! My brain is mush, and I steer clear of learning too many new things at this point....how bad is that?! Second- Like you said, you're brain is fresh and in the study/paper/test mode, so it would be so much easier now than later. As for the money-- I'm not the best advice giver. We're swimming in debt over here from LU and MED SCHOOL and now a shiny new car..... I would say go for it now! :)

I agree with everyone else. Why put it off? Debt is debt. It's better to get it over with while you're still in school mode. I think it's great!

If I were you I would call Dave Ramsey. Can you figure out how long it would take you to pay off the debt you have now with your pay and then compare it with how long it would take to pay off the debt with your dr. and the dr. pay? Also, could you shop around to find any cheaper programs? Dave would say a dr. is a dr. no matter where it comes from. You could also take it slower so you could pay as you go. Maybe get the EdS. on the way. Its a hard decision b/c I totally understand doing it now while you are ready to do it. Since you don't know what you're life will look like years from now you want to do it while it fits in. Good luck deciding.
Also, the auctioning of teachers is a fundraiser my school does along with a themed basket auction. They are silent auctions and teachers do all kinds of things usually outside of school. Some had days at the zoo, dinner and a movie, a water party after school, etc. Its pretty fun.
